Anatomage: Exploring the Human Body Through Virtual Cadavers: Drake’s new state-of-the-art Anatomage Table 10 is a 3D virtual visualization system, which allows students to view 5 different cadavers, 1000 case studies, and radiology software! With Table 10, students learn through interaction with detailed anatomy, pathologies, and functional pathways. In this mock class, students will have the opportunity to dissect a virtual cadaver, identify donor cadaver organs, and view several medical case studies!
Contagion Simulation: The Spread and Prevention of Infectious Diseases: In this interactive session students will explore how infectious diseases spread through communities and populations while discovering effective methods of prevention. Through hands on simulation students will see first-hand how different pathogens can travel undetected through communities and solve the mystery of who is patient X.
Reflexes & Nerve Conduction Velocity: Reflexes are rapid, involuntary responses to a stimulus. Testing reflexes are useful for evaluating the condition of the human nervous system. Somatic reflexes, like the patellar tendon tap, involve the action of skeletal muscles. Autonomic reflexes include a diverse array of functions, like sweating, heart function, or GI function, but we are usually unaware of them. In this lab activity we will test human somatic and autonomic reflexes. We will also record nerve conduction velocity, which tells us how fast a nerve impulse travels from the site of stimulation to the spinal cord.
Suture Clinic: Clinicians and researchers use the same kinds of surgical techniques. In this suture clinic we will learn the basic procedures as we practice performing simple suturing skills. Participants will try different kinds of suture materials on different models.
Visual Perception and the Retina: Of all of our senses, vision is the one humans typically rely on most. However, our eyes are fascinatingly imperfect instruments for the job! In this lab, we will study the organization of your eye's light sensitive membrane, the retina, and explore the consequences of the retina’s structure in how we perceive the world around us.
